about

Alternative more acoustic version of a track not yet released.

Review by Justin Mason
Devil of the Tangled Blue Branches

An acoustic guitar comes in to start the song, a haunting, but seemingly familiar melody. As Alex’s vocals come in over the top of the acoustic, her voice reminds me of Delores O’RIordan, the late Cranberries singer. As they transition to the chorus, vocal harmonies blend with the obvious “minor” shift with the acoustic guitar. The second verse instantly comes in with the same haunting feel, and the second chorus shifted in the same way. Coming into the 3rd verse (A half verse at that) the acoustic guitar dropped out to give the final verse an acapella feel, as the final chorus builds back up and crescendos.

If you are a fan of acoustic folk music, Alex Blum and the Roadside Quartet should be on your playlist. If I had to rate this new single by them, I would give it an 8.5 out of 10. I would love to hear a full band version of this song, to see just how the other musicians would compliment the song. Well done by Alex Blum and the Roadside Quartet.

lyrics

Blood…and mud…water’s rising up
Souls…underneath…trying to breathe
There’s a monster…in the shadows…with his sweat and his steam
Rising up…like a storm…starting to scream

Devil of the tangled blue branches
Yellow eyes on me

Behind the quiet…of my eyes…I see invisible pieces
They float…like a boat…down this dirty little stream
If I play…to near…then they all just disappear
From my mind…without a sign…like they were never even here

Devil of the tangled blue branches
Eyes on me
Devil of the tangled blue branches
Yellow eyes on me
Can't you see...

Ghosts…of women…are hiding in the trees
They dance…and they sing…their melodies to me

Devil of the tangled blue branches
Eyes on me
Devil of the tangled blue branches
Yellow eyes on me…me…me
