lyrics

Did I hear your voice again, a simple trick in the nighttime wind
While I’m dozing off trying to forget
Out my window on the stoop, the rain patters an old soft shoe
Rhythm & a sway or maybe Bowie’s Suffragette
Headlights glow down below stretching up past Deadbeat Row
& then disappear where they long to get
The radiator’s wheezing for relief
Meanwhile, in a window ‘cross the street
Two lovers tumble in a heap
But it’s nothing that we haven’t seen
No mystique, just veneer and plastic mimicry
& the ghost of your smile keeps me company

In the tiny bar beneath, sometimes you can see celebrities
Hunkered in a booth & drinking for free
Outside are girls with their hot pants pink thumbing up cash to the roller rink
Or a wobble & sneeze in the backseat checkered T
The pot is boiling on the gas, my mama used to say this too will pass
If I’d let it be & just believe
Gonna call me a number that I know
Gonna show me a good time & curl my toes
But who am I kidding there’s nobody home
Would it really hurt to try & hope
It’s a daunting feat to keep from wanting it to be
& this ghost of your smile keeps haunting me

Ain’t it funny how the night’s so long you can’t sleep & it all feels wrong
When you’re sorting through photos of days that are gone
Pictures from the bar downstairs, they caught you smiling they caught your stare
& there are faded ones too from our trip to St. John’s
I hear a hollering couple outside; I sip some tea while the radiator sighs
Should I watch TV, if something’s even on
It’s getting light now but I’m still awake
Everything on these walls to me seem fake
I’m not sure how much more I can take
And wherever I gaze you’re surrounding me
Filling the room, it’s a vacuum I can’t escape or flee
& the ghost of your smile is killing me
Yes, the ghost your smile keeps haunting me
& the ghost of your smile keeps me company
