about

Country

Notes by Patrick:
I wrote this one a few years before the band got together. An acoustic demo appeared on my Outtakes and Pancakes release and was titled Gone to the Movies. I changed some of the words, and as usual, Alex edited it a bit to fit herself better. This was a song that she really liked, gravitated towards, and insisted that we record it. It is a country song, so I wanted kind of a smooth late 60’s or early 70’s Nashville sound, though we didn’t use any strings. Douglas and I did some backing vocals, while Ed Brooks played pedal steel. Everyone will have a final movie to watch, and mine will be Touch of Evil, as referenced in the second verse. And who hasn’t shared their popcorn with a stranger at the movies. The deceit and betrayal are juxtaposed with the action in the movie.

lyrics

If you see that boy of mine say I’ve gone to the movies
I’ll be sitting in a dark back row staring up at the screen
Maybe I’ll share some popcorn with a stranger next to me
And we’ll sip from the bottle that I snuck in under my sleeve
If you see that boy tonight
Yeah, if you see my baby tonight
Tell him I’m alright
I’ve only gone to the movies

If you see my boy tonight say I’ve gone to the movies
I’ll be watching Charlie Heston play a Mexican for Orson Welles
And even though I’ve memorized it all by heart, I talk to Dietrich in my favorite parts
Tell those Grandview boys to sit back down
Well if you see that boy tonight
Yeah, if you see my baby tonight
Tell him I’m alright
I’ve only gone to the movies

If you see that boy of mine say I’ve gone to the movies
One last night of some good old Hollywood
I’m gonna swallow me some pills and shut my eyes when I get my fill
And when the credits are done and the light are on I’ll be gone
But if you see that boy tonight
Yeah, if you see my baby tonight
Tell him I’m alright
I’ve only gone to the movies
I’ve only gone to the movies
