about

Folky

Notes by Patrick:
I wanted to write a folk song that seemed old and traditional, as though it had been in the culture for hundreds of years. I used the title of Marcus Greil’s book, The Old Weird America, as inspiration to tell a yarn about a tragedy that just seemed to be accepted by folks…as if “Well, that’s how it goes sometimes.” This is another song that Alex loves and insisted we record it as soon as possible.

lyrics

Has anyone here seen Polly McDonald?
We’ve search high and low, near and far
Has anyone here seen Polly McDonald?
‘Cause her husband just sits at the bar

We all sit around missing Polly McDonald
And toasting the old, weird America
Seven months pregnant when Polly went missing
Last Tuesday at sunset or so it’s been told

Has anyone here seen Polly McDonald?
We’ve search high and low, near and far
Has anyone here seen Polly McDonald?
‘Cause her husband just sits at the bar

After three years of marriage her husband went sailing
For a year he was gone out to sea
His ship finally sailed into port Sunday morning
So Polly packed her belly up and went down to see
Chorus
Polly, my Polly won’t you come out and see
I’ve something I must show you dear
So gingerly Polly followed her husband
As they walked from their house to the woods that were near

There were tears in her eyes when they finally stopped walking
And she knew that her fate was at hand
She tried to explain all that had happened
But she knew as she spoke that he’d never understand

Has anyone here seen Polly McDonald?
We’ve search high and low, near and far
Has anyone here seen Polly McDonald?
‘Cause her husband just sits at the bar

Polly, my Polly you’ve broken my heart
I’ve dug up my pain in this earth
So Polly crawled down in a hole he had dug her
As he covered her face and her belly with dirt

Has anyone here seen Polly McDonald?
We’ve search high and low, near and far
Has anyone here seen Polly McDonald?
‘Cause her husband just sits at the bar

We all sit around missing Polly McDonald
And toasting the old, weird America
